ABOUT WATER BY ULF SAUPE, with the special collaboration of ECOALF

From 12th to 14th of September

In the context of  APERTURA 2019, event in which 49 galleries of Madrid join their openings on September 12th 2019, ART U READY joins its neighbouring galleries, Elba Benítez, Heinrich Erdhart, La Cometa, Carlier Gebauer and Travesía Cuatro, to premiere “About Water”, the exhibition by the German artist Ulf Saupe, with the special collaboration of ECOALF, the sustainable fashion firm.

2019, July the 29th. The planet is in the red. It has entered into ecological deficit. This is how ‘Overshoot day’ or ‘Overcapacity Day’ is presented. This date sets the moment when humanity has consumed all the natural resources that the Earth is capable of regenerating in a year. At present, it is estimated that we consume the land wealth up to 1.75 times faster: water, food, wood, fossil fuels, carbon emissions…

Water is a great threatened resource. On a global scale, in the last 50 years, the extraction of water from the subsoil has tripled in the world. Between 2011 and 2050, the world population is expected to go from 7,000 to 9,000 million inhabitants, according to the United Nations population report, a factor that will be decisive in future water demand.

To feed this entire population, food production will have to grow by 70%. Everything we eat or drink requires water for its manufacture. In fact, 92% of the daily consumed water is used to produce food.

Paper, plastics, clothes, cars and the vast majority of the objects that surround us are water consumers.

(Information from Water Footprint Network).

In turn, plastic has flooded our daily life: we can find it in product packaging, cosmetic ingredients, clothing textiles, building materials…

The world situation is dramatic, even more so considering that plastics production will approach 500 million tons in 2020 (900% more than in 1980). These quantities, its easy dispersion and its slow degradation process make plastic the number one enemy of seas and oceans. Its use is a problem associated with consumption modes, since most are used for single-use containers. Spain is the fifth largest producer in the EU.

The plastics we find on the surface are only the tip of the iceberg, since they represent less than 15% of all plastics in the sea.

Reducing the use and impact that plastics have on ecosystems is everyone’s responsibility, both public administrations and citizens. Its effects, although it may seem imperceptible, are devastating, extending from the Arctic to Antarctica, wreaking ravages on marine species.

The use of plastic is unsustainable and is a clear example of the impacts of the current culture of disposability. Therefore, we must go to the origin of the problem and, first, reduce the amount of plastic that is put into circulation and then, promote the reuse. There is already a growing movement of people around the world who has a commitment to a lifestyle free of single-use plastics.

“Like water always finds its way and even forms the hardest stone over time, the truth can also not be concealed and eventually comes to the surface. Drop by drop the glass is filled till either the last straw brakes the camel’s back or synergies join together with the will to prevent the avoidable and stand for a necessary change.” Ulf Saupe.

About Water” is not only an exhibition that shows experimental photography on white walls. It is a joint venture of people that are concerned about the future of our planet with a focus on sustainability and are concerned to handle limited recourses with care.

ART U READY makes a call for action through an exhibition that shows a specific problematic of our society by joining the talents of an artist committed to sustainability and water, Ulf Saupe and ECOALF, a Spanish visionary company in the small field of sustainable fashion industry, for whom cleaning the oceans has become a top priority, transforming marine litter into design, quality and beauty. They join the initiative through an installation made from plastic bottles and a signed limited edition t-shirts with artworks by the artist that will be for sale during the exhibition. The benefits of the sale of the t-shirts will be donated fully to the Ecoalf Foundation, for their project UPCYCLING THE OCEANS whose goal is the collection of sea waste in order to transform it into thread and high quality clothes through a circular economy approach. The exhibition will take place on the premises of ART U READY, el Invernadero, a space from the second half of the 19th century, hidden in the courtyard of an emblematic historical building in 11 San Lorenzo Street.

ART U READY intends to cross borders with this project and plans to replicate the exhibition in Berlin in January 2020.

The artist

Ulf Saupe born German (1979). He studied Fine Arts at the university in Kassel with the focus on experimental photography in professor Floris Neusüss class and also lived several years in Madrid.

His oeuvre embraces photography, sculpture and installation works that reflects the human condition and relationship towards nature and society.

For the last couple years the element water has been very present in his work. In this exhibition we show his large scaled cyanotypes (an early photo printing technique from the 19th century) with a selection from the series “Waterscapes”, “Res Navalis” and “Water Drops”, three photographic series of mesmerizing beauty. While the first two series are focused on current subjects that preoccupy the artist, “Waterscapes” is his particular tribute to the ocean.

It will be accompanied with a sound installation, “Lost Drops”, where Ulf Saupe has collaborated with Juan Carlos Fernández Puerta and Marta Serrano Ortega.

Based in Berlin since 2007, he settled down in Madrid for several years at a given stage of his artistic career and is coming back now in order to present his first exhibition in Spain.

“It was pure coincidence that I was born on a blue planet. As such, water would always be an inescapable truth for me.” Ulf Saupe.

This is an action platform that gives visibility to artists with values, and which main objective is to improve our society. Its 2019-2020 projects are focused on raising calls for action on the current issues that involve all of us.

They define themselves as cell of ideas in constant evolution merging together architecture, art, design, technology, education and consciousness. They serve as talent catalysts, a platform that gives visibility to creators with a cross-cutting look and a peripheral vision aligning values that improve our society. Consistent with their principles, they stand out for their unique and defined artistic vision, as well as for finding singular spaces for each event and artist.

This proposal was developed by The Sibarist Property & Homes and M-ARTE, as creators, organizers and main sponsors.
